Episode Transcription

Welcome to the five-minute catch up my name is Gill O’Donnell from the Quality Improvement Team, and this is your weekly Check-up.

In this week’s podcast we’ll talk about our Practice Connect networking event, mentors for APNA’s Transition to Practice Program, TGA COVID-19 vaccine approvals, chronic disease workshops, CHN education events and more.

To start things off, CHN’s second Practice Connect networking event for Practice Managers and Practice Nurses is coming up on Tuesday 18 October. This event will be exploring opportunities for management of patients living with chronic disease in your practice focused on chronic disease management, in particular GPMPs and TCAs and the roles all practice staff play in these processes. Practice Connect will be held at The Glasshouse, Pialligo Estate. See the link below for more information.

Staying with practice nursing, CHN in partnership with APNA, is excited to be supporting nurses in the ACT to complete APNA’s Transition to Practice Program which starts this month. APNA is now seeking experienced practice nurses interested in becoming mentors for the October intake of the Program. To be eligible, nurses must work in the ACT and have been in primary health care for more than four years. The link to apply is available below.

To COVID, and the TGA has provisionally approved the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for use as a booster in children aged 5–11. This is the first COVID-19 vaccine to be approved by the TGA for use as a booster in that age group. They have also provisionally approved a paediatric dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, COMIRNATY, for children aged 6 months to less than 5 years. ATAGI are expected to outline their recommendations for these two vaccines in the coming weeks. See the links below for more information.

Now it’s time for the titbits…

Canberra Health Services COVID-19 Clinic has moved from the Garran Surge Centre to the Weston Creek Community Health Centre. The clinic provides face to face support for anyone who has tested positive to COVID-19 over the age of 1.  Due to decreased demand, the opening hours have also changed, and the clinic is now open from 2pm – 10pm 7 days a week. Further information is in the link below.

The RACGP have released their General Practice: Health of the Nation 2022 report, their annual report providing insights into general practice in Australia. A link to the report is available below.

Healthpathways have added a new pathway for return-to-work assessment and rehabilitation, again the link is available below.

Finally, upcoming CHN events include the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness Training event for primary care professionals and their staff. This free, face-to- face event will be held on 25 October. Other upcoming events include Abortion Care in General Practice – Provision and Referral on 13 October, Electronic Referral Webinar on 26th October and look out for upcoming details of our Chronic Headache and Neuropathic pain face to face event on 8th November.
