Episode Transcription

Welcome to the five-minute catch up my name is Greta Welin from the Quality Improvement Team, and this is your weekly Check-up.

In this week’s podcast we’ll talk about the new ADHD guideline, telehealth rules, COVID-19 drug treatment advice, APNA programs, Drop the Jargon Day, new NMBA fact sheet, CHN education events and more.

To start things off, a new guideline for ADHD has been released by the Australian ADHD Professionals Association, outlining recommendations for diagnosis, support and treatment including medications and nonpharmacological options. It outlines a roadmap for ADHD clinical practice, research and policy, with a focus on everyday functioning and quality of life for people who are living with ADHD and those who support them. A link to the guideline can be found below.

In COVID news, the National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce has provided some new advice on drug treatments that are not recommended for COVID-19. They have also updated recommendations for chemoprophylaxis of COVID-19. Also updated are drug treatment flowcharts for adults, children and adolescents, and for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Links to this advice and the updated flowcharts are below.

Staying with COVID, and with the changes to Public Health Orders coming in last week, GPs should be reassured that the level C telehealth item for assessment and consideration of COVID-19 antivirals is excluded from the 1 in 12 rule. That is, there is no requirement for a pre-existing relationship and this item is unaffected by any change in state and territory Public Health Orders. The Department of Health and Aged Care will have more advice on this shortly. Further details of exemptions are in the link below.

To primary care nursing, APNA have just launched their Student Nurse Placement Program in the ACT and NSW. The Program offers students the opportunity to experience primary health care nursing in a range of locations, with APNA working directly with Australian universities and tertiary institutions to provide these placements. They are looking for passionate nurses who are keen to share their experience and skills with the next generation of nurses. If you or your colleagues are interested in hosting students for their clinical placement hours, please register your interest through the link below.

APNA is also bringing their Conference Roadshow to Canberra on the 3rd and 4th of November with a full program for primary health care nurses covering topics such as immunisation, wounds, palliative care, and mental health. Registrations are available through the link below and close on the 25th of October.

Now it’s time for the titbits…

Today is Drop the Jargon Day, a day for professionals in Australian health services, community services and local government to practice clear, jargon-free communication. For more information including how you can make a difference, see the link below.

And the NMBA, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, has published a fact sheet on the roles and scope of practice of registered nurses, enrolled nurses, nurse practitioners and midwives. It clarifies the educational outcomes, provides examples of core activities, and highlights the fundamental differences between each practitioner category. The fact sheet has been developed as a guide for employers, private and public health services, and other practitioners.

Finally, Capital Health Network has the Electronic referrals for GPs and specialists webinar coming up on the 26th of October. See the link below to register for this event and to stay up to date with new events.
