Episode Transcription

Welcome to the five-minute catch up my name is Greta Welin from the Quality Improvement Team, and this is your weekly Check-up.

In this week’s podcast we will be discussing APNA’s Transition to Practice Program, Novavax for adolescents, ACT Moderna vaccination sites for under 5s, updated COVID vaccination and management guidance for children, adolescents and vulnerable groups, Tomato flu, pulmonary function testing during the pandemic and more.

To start things off, Capital Health Network in partnership with APNA, are supporting nurses in the ACT who are new or transitioning to general practice nursing, to complete APNA’s Transition to Practice Program. We are now accepting applications through the link below, please note the application closing date is 7th September 2022.

ATAGI have advised that Novavax can be used for the primary course of COVID-19 vaccination in adolescents aged 12-17 years, from 5 September 2022. They recommend COVID-19 vaccination in all adolescents in this age group and advise that Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax can be used for the primary course. A link to ATAGI’s statement can be found below.

The Department of Health and Aged Care has launched its Moderna 6 months to 5 years training module in support of the on-going COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. There is a requirement to complete core modules as well as the Moderna 3. and 3.a modules prior to 3b. Details of the COVID vaccination training program, how to access all modules and register your site are in the link below.

In the ACT the vaccine is available for the 6 month to 5 year cohort at Next Practice Deakin, Kenolta Medical Centre, HealthFount Medical Centre, and Fadden Medical Centre.

The National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce has updated guidelines for people with COVID–19 who are receiving palliative care and those who are older or living with cognitive impairment. They have released a new flowchart for prescribing Paxlovid and for home-based care of children and adolescents with mild disease.

In other news, a new virus, Tomato flu has been reported in India, with 82 cases detected to date. Tomato flu shares symptoms with dengue fever, Chikungunya, and with hand, foot and mouth disease. It is described as causing red and painful blisters throughout the body that can gradually enlarge to the size of a tomato and is believed to be highly contagious prompting concerns it could reach Australia. See below for more details.

The Healthpathways team have made updates to the Chronic disease management and care co-ordination services, antenatal initial visit, and telehealth pathways. Details can be found in the link below.

Now it’s time for the titbits…
